Vegetable seed production and soil Fertility management
Vegetable seed production and fertilizer management for farmers in Mahetlwe, Kopong, Metsimotlhabe, Ditshukudu, Medie, Lentsweletau, Kgope, Gakuto held on 22 July 2024. The training was hosted by Hornbill farm where vegetables like cabbage, potato, tomato, butternut were the main crops grown.
The training entailed: i). Introduction to seedling production with topics like methods of producing seedlings, substrates used, fertigation together with a demonstration. ii) Production of vermicompost with topics like materials needed to make vermicompost and ways to ensure the compost is cured. There was a demonstration on fertilizer application methods and identification of nutrient deficiency symptoms in the field. Prof Nhamo explaining vermicompost production during the training. Observations in the field visit to appreciate challenge in the field. Water quality: The farmer’s irrigation water has high levels of calcium before it forms a whitish layer of the soil surface.
